Product Description

WELBAR CHICKEN

Introduction
The Welbar is a rare British autosexing chicken breed developed during the early twentieth century. Best known for its excellent egg production, calm temperament, and the ability to sex chicks at hatch based solely on down color, the Welbar remains one of the most practical utility breeds ever developed.
Although never as numerous as breeds like the Legbar or Welsummer, the Welbar has earned a loyal following among poultry enthusiasts, breeders, and homesteaders who appreciate its combination of beauty, productivity, and historic significance.
Today, the Welbar is considered a conservation breed and is relatively uncommon outside dedicated breeding circles.

History of the Welbar
The Welbar originated in England during the 1940s.
The breed was created by renowned poultry geneticist Reginald Crundall Punnett, often known simply as R. C. Punnett.
Punnett was one of the world's leading poultry geneticists and became famous for developing several autosexing breeds that allowed chicks to be sexed immediately after hatch.
His work revolutionized poultry breeding by applying Mendelian genetics to practical poultry production.
The Welbar was developed primarily by crossing:
Welsummer
Barred Plymouth Rock
The objective was to combine:
Dark brown egg production
Attractive plumage
High laying ability
Strong constitution
Autosexing genetics
The resulting birds inherited the rich brown eggs of the Welsummer together with the barring gene from the Barred Plymouth Rock.
---
Why the Name "Welbar"?
The name combines the parent breeds:
Wel (from Welsummer)
Bar (from Barred Plymouth Rock)
=
Welbar
Like the Legbar, Rhodebar, Cambar, and other Punnett breeds, the name reflects its genetic heritage.
---
What Makes the Welbar Special?
The defining feature of the Welbar is that it is autosexing.
Unlike sex-linked hybrids produced commercially, autosexing is a permanent breed characteristic.
This means chicks hatch with different down coloration depending on whether they are male or female.
No vent sexing or feather sexing is required.
---
Autosexing Chicks
At hatch:
Pullets (Females)
Dark brown down
Sharp eye stripe
Well-defined chipmunk stripes
Distinct dark head marking
Rich overall coloring
Cockerels (Males)
Noticeably lighter overall
Larger pale head spot
More washed-out striping
Grayish appearance
Less defined markings
Experienced breeders can often determine sex with greater than 90% accuracy immediately after hatch.
---
Genetic Basis of Autosexing
The Welbar owes its autosexing ability primarily to the sex-linked barring gene (B).
Since males possess two Z chromosomes while females possess one Z and one W chromosome, inheritance of barring produces different down patterns in each sex.
This visible genetic difference allows accurate chick sexing without specialized training.

Individual strains vary.
---
Growth Rate
Welbars mature relatively quickly.
Typical milestones:
8 weeks: Young birds become easily distinguishable by adult feather coloration.

Roosters mature somewhat slower, reaching full adult appearance around one year.
---
Feed Efficiency
Welbars were bred as utility birds.
Advantages include:
Efficient feed conversion
Strong appetite without excessive waste

This trait allows them to remain productive egg layers throughout much of the year.
Breeders generally use incubators or broody hens of other breeds for hatching.
---
