Welcome to our family homestead, where poultry breeding, genetics, homesteading, incubation, and do-it-yourself problem solving all come together.

What began with a genuine interest in raising animals has grown into a long-term pursuit of understanding how careful selection, genetics, recordkeeping, husbandry, and practical ingenuity can improve the animals we raise and the way we care for them.

Poultry Genetics & Selective Breeding

We have a special interest in poultry genetics and purposeful breeding. Our work includes established breeds, rare and heritage genetics, autosexing poultry, bantam projects, egg-color projects, production traits, and long-term breeding lines.

For us, a breeding program should have a goal behind every pairing. We enjoy studying what each generation teaches us and using those results to make the next generation better.

Homesteading Is More Than Keeping Chickens

Homesteading, to us, means learning to do more for ourselves and making the best use of the resources we have. Around here that can mean hatching eggs, raising quail, gardening, saving seed, building equipment, repairing something instead of replacing it, or designing a better way to handle a routine farm job.

Always Another Project

There always seems to be another incubator, brooder, cage, feeder, watering system, breeding pen, genetics experiment, or garden project underway. Some work exactly as planned. Others teach us what to change the next time. Both kinds of projects are valuable.

We want Pritchett's Small Pets to be more than a place to see what we raise. Our goal is to build a useful resource for poultry keepers, breeders, homesteaders, and DIY-minded people who enjoy understanding why something works instead of simply being told what to do.
