Autosexing Poultry

Autosexing poultry can be distinguished by sex at hatch through predictable, genetically controlled differences in chick down color or pattern. It is different from producing a one-generation sex-link cross because a true autosexing line is intended to reproduce the trait generation after generation.

Why It Interests Us

Autosexing combines practical usefulness with challenging genetics. Building or maintaining a dependable line requires more than obtaining one correctly colored hatch. The breeder must select for the genetic combination, improve the clarity of the male and female chick patterns, and keep the adult birds useful and consistent with the goals of the project.

Accuracy Must Be Earned

Autosexing characteristics should be evaluated over repeated hatches. Some chicks are clearer examples than others, and different family lines can vary. We prefer to treat hatch results as data rather than assume a project is finished after one generation.

Breeding Beyond Chick Color

A good autosexing project still needs healthy, productive adult birds. We consider adult type, vigor, fertility, production, and the other traits relevant to the line alongside the day-old sexing characteristics.
